Putin spent two days in his hometown of St. Petersburg to host the presidents of the European Committee, the Prime Minister of Italy and officials of various international companies.

At the end of this week, the Russians want to convey that the EU and US sanctions imposed on Russia over the annexation of the Crimea in 2014 and their intervention in eastern Ukraine is futile.

Although the offer of reconciliation in many ways and refused to give an assessment of sensitive issues such as the referendum on the United Kingdom to get out of the EU, Putin highlighted the NATO missile defense plan, led by the US.

"Strategic balance is used to ensure peace in the world, this saved us from major armed conflict for 70 years," he said.

Putin also said Russia would not be too concerned about the decision the International Athletics Federation (IAAF), which prohibits the Russian athletics team to compete in the Olympic arena.

Nevertheless, Putin considers that the decision was unfair for athletes who are clean of doping cases. Putin hopes, a number of other Russian athletes still be allowed to compete.

"I hope we can find some solutions here. But that does not mean that we will not admit mistakes and stop fighting against doping. Instead, we will intensify our struggle on doping," Putin said in response to questions from The Associated Press.
